Movie » CoS DVD Review » Disc 1: The Film
By Jasen, Editor - April 11, 2003

Ever since I saw CoS in the theater last year, I knew I wanted to see it again. So I did a week later. And now, flash forward almost six months and I am now a proud owner of “The Chamber of Secrets” DVD. Now ever since the film’s release on November 15, 2002, it’s grossed millions in both the US and other countries, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever in cinematic history, right after its predecessor. And now, with the arrival of CoS on DVD, this will appease fans’ appetites for Book 5, if only for a while.

Image Quality:
The massive sets that production designer Stuart Craig and his crew built for the film are so remarkable already, that the extra special effects compliment it in all its glory. With that in mind, the 2.35:1 anamorphic setting really does translate the theatrical version of the movie to its new place on digital disc. The picture is full of crisp detail, which makes the experience of viewing the film for the third time still enjoyable. This film, especially on DVD video is truly gorgeous. Score: 5/5

Sound:
Ahh, imagine watching this movie without any sound. Frightening. But fortunately, thanks to the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on the disc, there’s no need to worry about sound discrepancies. The sound, like the picture, is very crisp (it’s best if you turn the volume up a lot if you don’t have a surround system) in everything, whether it be the hissing dialect of Harry speaking Parseltongue or the swift, swish of a whizzing Quidditch broom. And with John Williams and William Ross at work on the soundtrack, sound is definitely a good thing. Score: 4/5

The Extras:
Oh, the extras, how they are so fulfilling! Well, compared to the last one anyway. While one cannot forget the horrible second disc of “The Sorcerer’s Stone”, they should consider changing their opinion; CoS’s Special Features disc is not just an improvement…it’s actually enjoyable. The biggest improvements, however, were the easy accessibility to the remarkable 19 deleted scenes, and the behind-the-scenes featurettes, which included a chat with J.K. Rowling (in full blood and form) and the film’s scribe, Steve Kloves. A note regarding the short chat, I was really hoping Rowling would come out with some more tidbits about Book 5, but alas, I was left a little disgruntled that there wasn’t even a single mention of it. Well, I can’t say I’d blame her. Anyways, the extras were, with no doubt, a fun addition to the DVD. Score: 4/5

Overall:
Six months of waiting for the DVD have finally come and gone so quickly, and of course, there’s only one thing that fans could want more, which I will not utter again. But, as I said before, the CoS DVD was well worth the wait and thanks to all goodness, WB listened to the fans’ concerns over “The Sorcerer’s Stone” DVD and made the necessary changes. Well, I’ve been sitting patiently for the last three hours, first watching the film, than the extras and now here, writing this review. So I must end with a final comment: I wonder what I’ll think about “The Prisoner of Azkaban’s” DVD. Oh, too bad that’s so far away. Score: 4.5/5
