 OotP to Have New Screenwriter

- [ Nick @ 10:19 AM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

The Leaky Cauldron managed to get an interview with the Potter film producer David Heyman. The interview centered around the fifth installment's new screenwriter, Michael Goldenberg.

TLC: What led you to Goldenberg?
Heyman: Michael is someone who I have been a fan of for a long time. I've read his scripts and seen his films for a while, Contact, and the like. He was somebody who I'd been speaking to for a while.

Actually, he wrote some pages on spec for me for Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone, and I liked those pages but we were already in discussion with Kloves and I was very happy we went with Kloves. But Michael was the first person I thought of when coming to the fifth.

TLC: Are there any stylistic differences between him and Kloves you can talk about?
Heyman: It's too early to tell. Hopefully it iwll continue to be in the spirit of the book. The scripts are in the spirit of the books and that will continue."

There is definitely still more from the Azkaban DVD launch on the way.

New Screenwriter For Order of the Phoenix

- [ Jasen @ 07:30 PM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

According to producer David Heyman, Steven Kloves, who wrote the first four "Harry Potter" screenplays will be stepping aside for the fifth installment in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, to return to directing. Kloves wrote and directed the popular 1989 film The Fabulous Baker Boys with Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff and Beau Bridges, and he is anxious to get back into directing by adapting Mark Haddon's best-selling novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which Heyman will also produce.

Heyman will be working with writer Michael Goldenberg on the script for "Order of the Phoenix," with the usual final approval by J.K. Rowling herself. Goldenberg wrote Jodie Foster's Contact, the 2003 adaptation of Peter Pan, as well as the screenplay for the upcoming Where the Wild Things Are film, which is to be directed by Spike Jonze.

At the time of this writing, the plans are to start shooting "Order of the Phoenix" in January 2006 for a Spring or Fall 2007 release. A director should hopefully be announced by the end of the year.

 No Casting Plans for Phoenix

- [ M17 @ 06:06 PM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

Despite talks with Indian film director Mira Nair for the position of director of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, a new article at CBBC tell us that it's still too early for casting for the fifth movie.

"We don't have a script, director, start date or casting director and no one will be considered for any role until all these are in place.

"We don't want children to be disappointed, so we're asking them not to write into the studios. It would be a waste of their time."

Warner Bros. also told us that there's no point in trying to write in to be an extra in Goblet of Fire, as they're usually found through local schools or special agencies.

Mira Nair: "How do they know?"

- [ M17 @ 05:53 PM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

... well, that's likely over-exaggerated. But a recent article from New Kerala quotes possible-director-of-GoF-Mira Nair as saying:

Though she doesn't deny the fact that she has been approached, Nair said: "Right now it's too early to talk about it. I don't know how it got out on the websites. I have to sit with them and work out the dates."

Which is another interesting bit ("work out the dates"). On a side note, the article also mentions some of Nair's upcoming movies (ie "The Namesake"). We'll keep you posted as more becomes available.

UPDATE: Mira Nair As OotP Director?

- [ Jasen @ 04:15 PM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

According to Times of India, Mira Nair (Vanity Fair) has been approached by Warner Bros. to be the director of the fifth Harry Potter movie:

"I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter: The Order Of The Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance." I'm a Dilliwalli, only an asana gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."

Interesting -- we'll keep you posted.

Does "Order of the Phoenix" Have A Director?

- [ Jasen @ 02:37 PM . GMT . Movie: OotP ]

According to this Brazillian film site, director Mira Nair has been "invited by Warner Bros." to direct the fifth Harry Potter movie. However, as the Goblet of Fire is not even close to completion, and no official announcement has been made by Warner Bros., themselves, this should be regarded as pure rumor.
